EARLY DAY MOTION

That this House draws attention to the rare and serious muscle condition Myotubular Myopathy; commends the work of the Myotubular Trust for raising funds for much needed research into this condition; notes that two eminent Professors of Neurology based at the Hammersmith Hospital judge that, with more research into this condition, help can be given to those suffering from it; acknowledges the contribution of Wendy Hughes, Trustee and Director of the Myotubular Trust for her awareness-building and fundraising projects for this new charity; and congratulates her on organising over 6,000 school children in Buckinghamshire among them Wendy Hughes’ son Zak and his friends at Chalfont St Peter church of England School as well as some brownie, guide and national schools to attempt a Guinness World Record to make the World’s Longest Bunting Line.

Her Majesty's reply

Between April and July 2006, over 6,270 children (and a few adults) painted, drew and glittered some beautiful designs and messages on fabric flags - each one becoming a stunning and an individual work of art. The bunting was measured accurately at 1,504.72 metres and hung in Chalfont St Peter CE School, Bucks!! This has now been confirmed as a new Guinness World Record™!

Twistlink Ltd (of Leicester) specially made 2.5kms of continuous nylon tape on which to sew the pennants and Nikwax very generously donated 25litre of Nikwax "Tent and Gear Proof" waterproofing liquid to protect the flags.

The pennants were judged by Cheryl Gillan MP and Headteacher John Underwood, to check that each measured exactly 19cm across the top and 29cms on the 2 diagonals, and sewn 5cms apart on the continuous tape. Cheryl Gillan was so impressed by the feat that she declared an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons.

This bunting line is symbolic of the care and compassion shown by others to children with Myotubular Myopathy. Many flags include special messages of support for friends and loved ones who suffer from the condition. Many give a real flavour of 2006, the year our charity was born: The Queen's Birthday, and the World Cup. Read the article published in Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's Target Magazine.

Many, many celebrities helped support this event by each signing a specially made "gold" flag and our sincere thanks go to them for helping us. Their names are listed at the bottom of this page. More 'names' are being collected from Glastonbury 2007!

The Committee! These are just a few of the "bunting babes" who helped to cut out flags to give to schools, then sew decorated flags onto continous tape. Finally, they helped with the huge task of measuring and hanging the bunting!

FLAGS FLYING FOR CHILDREN WITH MYOTUBULAR MYOPATHY IN "THE PARK" AT GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL 2007

In summer 2005 and inspired by the Glastonbury Festival flags, the idea for the Myotubular Trust's longest bunting line, to help launch this charity, was conceived.

This year, the flags, which have now achieved a Guinness World Record™ for being the longest bunting line are being displayed at Glastonbury Festival to help promote funding and awareness to find a cure or treatment for children with myotubular myopathy.

The flags are being displayed in Emily Eavis' new field called "The Park" which is being beautifully designed with the help of talented designer, Misty Buckley.
