The Loughlin Boys' Cup

The Loughlin Boys Cup 2010 marks the 10th birthday of their first born, Nathan

On 24 July, Marie Loughlin, her husband John and two of their friends, Derek O'Loughlin and Susan Fitzhenry hosted a 5-a-side football tournament in memory of their sons Nathan, Sean and Alex. Marie and John were particularly looking forward to their very first Loughlin Boys Cup event, as this year marks the tenth birthday of their first born, Nathan.

The one day event was held at Galway Hibernians pitch, with 33 teams taking part over 5 hours of play. The winner of the tournament received €500 along with the Loughlin Boys' Cup and there were smaller prizes of €250, €170 and €70 for the runners up.

Here is Marie's own account of the day:

"Loughlin Boys Cup started off as a misty cloudy day, but as with all good days the sun finally came out for the final! 33 teams and god knows how many matches later the final had arrived with 'Mixers Bad Boys' turning up as the first ever winners of the Loughlin Boys Cup! Myself, John, Susan and Derek were so delighted with the way everything had turned out that day.

Onto the evening celebrations and all our friends turned up and a great night was had by all. In between my crying I managed to make a speech and thank everyone; but I mainly raised awareness of myotubular myopathy which was my goal. Also at the presentation evening we held an auction which I have to say I didnt think we would pull off as well as we did - but it was brilliant and I'm still high on the emotions of the evening and the fact that I have some of the best friends in the world!

I'm so delighted with how it all went and all I can say is it can only get better next year!"
