"It was a superb day out - at least 27,000 people do the ride and it is full of excitement and chatter the whole way!" says Fiona
Myotubular Trust is so grateful for all your efforts to raise funds and awareness to help children like Will. |
Fiona, Rhoda, Caroline and Simon cycled 56 miles from London to Brighton earlier this summer to help find a treatment or cure for Fiona's nephew, Will, who was born earlier this year with myotubular myopathy .
The cycle took them 7.5 hours to complete. With a start time of 6.30am on Clapham Common they had to get up at 3am! But there were lots of supporters on route with water and home-made cakes and thankfully lots of pit stops with toilets!!
Fiona Collins said "Ditchling Beacon" is the shocker at circa 45 miles in; just as your legs are feeling the distance. It is a steep, slow and winding hill. It is a killer. Not many people make it in one go without stopping or falling off (several just falling over as going so slow on the steep hill), and several just don't even attempt it. This year there was a man on a microphone who was encouraging everyone on the last 800m up the hill, just at the part where your life is passing past your eyes and your heart is pounding in your ears! However the view from the top is magnificent and then a wonderful steep descent into Brighton, so it was all worth it".
They managed to survive the whole trip without injury, and just one tyre that blew out on Fiona's bike just 4 miles from the end. Luckily a spare tyre and willing pairs of hands were on the ready and the team was only delayed around 20 mins.
Fiona summarised "it was an awesome day, fantastic sightseeing, wonderful company and laughter, superb sugary homemade cake and burgers by a local Scout team. Most significantly a brilliant sense of achievement and ice cold beers on a sunny Brighton beach at the end. And of course loads of money for the Trust and no doubt the British Heart Foundation, who are the organising charity".
