Glen Takes The Plunge! |

We would like to send our thanks and congratulations to Glen Dobson, who undertook the challenge of completing his first parachute jump in support of the Trust. Glen was inspired to raise research funds by his friend’s son, Reece, who has myotubular myopathy. Below is Glen’s own account of the jump: ‘I am the terrified one at the bottom. (I guess the guy wanted a soft landing). It was my first jump and it took place at the Black Nights Parachute School near to Cockerham, Lancashire. The aircraft is the fastest climbing turbo prop of its type in Europe and got is up to 14,000 feet in just 12 minutes. After leaving the aircraft we were in freefall at 160mph for approximately 50 seconds with nothing but beautiful blue sky all around and the white clouds seemingly miles below. On deployment of the main chute at about 5,000 feet there was a moment of anxious anticipation as the canopy danced around above us trying to grasp the air. Until this point, the experience is just a mad adrenaline filled rush with the wind roaring in your ears and buffeting you around. Once the canopy opens however it is deadly silent as we floated down to earth for about 5 minutes executing spins and turns, passing through the chilly cloud base until finally breaking free with the landing zone in site. By this time the aircraft has already landed and turned around ready for the next flight. Then before you know it the ground is rushing up to you as the instructor slows the descent landing softly but unceremoniously on ones bottom. Throughout the jump I was followed down by a camera man who produced a DVD , a copy of which I have given to Reece and his family. The whole event was made worthwhile just to see Reece's reaction when I mentioned his name during the filmed interview at the start.’ Glen raised a fantastic amount of money for the Trust and is already planning his next challenge – he is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2010 – we wish you best luck. Thanks Glen! |
