Day 1
11 men and 3 boys and a dog (12 cycling two in support van) set off from Stevenston at 8.30 am to catch the 9.45 am ferry at Ardrossan to Arran. Cycled from Brodick to Lochranza which is on north of the island. Another Ferry to Clonaig which is on the Kintyre Peninsula where we settled for the fist night near Machrihanish. When we left Stevenston it was a beautiful day but when we reached the campsite we had travelled across the some of the most stunning views and (Steepest Hills) you could ever imagine. We were 1 bike down - Breakdown. Luckily we had a spare bike in the van. 1 Man down due to injury (He made his way home in the morning) 2 Tents down due to weather change which was now windy and torrential rain. (WHAT ELSE COULD WE EXPECT IT WAS THE 13TH)
Day 2
Weather was overcast set off from Machrihanish to Tayinlonan to catch the ferry to Ardmininish on the island of Ghia. Small island spent a couple of hours looking at the island and then ferry back to Tayinlonan. We then headed to Kennacraig and caught the ferry to Port Ellen which took two and a half hours. This is on the island of Islay which is famous for Whisky Distilleries. We then set up camp at Kintra which is situated in Laggan Bay.
Day 3
Set off to visit the Whisky Distilleries that were situated on the South of the Island visited Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig unfortunately at this time of year they do not distil whisky but we enjoyed the tours and the free “nips”. We then visited the Bowmore Distillery which is situated North West of the island. We then headed North East to catch the ferry from Port Eskaig to the island of Jura. We headed for our campsite at Craighouse this is where the Isle of Jura Whisky is made. At the campsite this is where the dreaded “midgies” appeared as the weather was humid ideal for the “midgies”. We sat on the shore with the camp fire going enjoying the views and the banter.
Day 4
Headed back to Port Eskay on Islay to catch our ferry back to Kennacraig on Kintyre. Travelled to Tarbet and caught the ferry over Loch Fyne to Port Avadie from there we headed to Glendaruel and set up camp ( we thought the hills were bad on the first day but they were not a patch on these hills facing us today). Caught sight of an Adder didn’t bother going too close.
Day 5
Last day headed to Colintraive to catch ferry over to Rhubodach on the Island of Bute. Travelled south to Rothesay and caught ferry over to Wemyss Bay on the Mainland. Headed for Largs and caught ferry over to Great Cumbrae and cycled round the island (this was not in the original plan). Last leg of the journey Largs homeward bound back to Stevenston. Arrived home approximately 3.30 pm. Tired, weather beaten but sad it was over as it was a wonderful experience. We had cycled 250 miles over the five days, had visited six islands and had been on 13 ferries and seen some of the most beautiful scenery you could imagine |
